Leslie Love is a fighter for the people who has worked in the trenches, part of a generational tradition that began for her when at the age of ten she walked the picket line alongside her mother, Teamsters and workers who fought for a decent living wage. She organized steel workers in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and worked on the Justice for Janitors campaign in Detroit. In 2007, Leslie Love traveled to South Africa and examined the affects of Apartheid and HIV/AIDS on that region.
She has seen the ugly face of injustice, sexism, and racism up close and personal and has committed herself to fighting those injustices.
Leslie remains deeply involved in her community, serving on the board of the Schaefer 7/8 Lodge Neighborhood Association, she has developed successful community enrichment projects and has helped write over $200,000 in grants that went right back into serving the residents of District 8. As an educator and entertainer, Ms. Love has been instrumental in developing and participating in building after-school enrichment programs that prepare young people to
function in a global society. Demonstrating her commitment to prepare the next generation to lead, Leslie has worked with young people at Mumford High School, St. John’s Teen H.Y.P.E. program at Cooley High School, Bates Academy, Cranbrook’s Horizons Upward Bound, Detroit Youthville, and the Heidelberg Project to name a few. Leslie is also very active in her church, most recently serving as Chairwoman for the Board for Christian Education at Plymouth United Church of Christ.
